Yesterday I turned 35 yep only five more years until I hit the BIG 40! I had a fabulous birthday, my husband and children took me out to one of my favorite sushi restaurants and gave me a ton of beautiful winter clothes. With my birthday smack in the middle of the holiday dessert coma, I decided this year to have a cake that was healthy, but also really yummy.  I usually make my family’s birthday cakes because we are gluten free.  I finally decided to make a cake out of fruit like the company Edible Arrangements and it turned out better than I expected.  The great thing is if I can do this so can you and it is not that hard to do.  If you want a cake that makes people go WOW and tastes out of this world then you have come to the right place.

Items Needed to Make Your Own Edible Fruit Cake Arrangement:

Toothpicks (they are the glue of your cake)

Styrofoam I use a cone and a wreath circle Styrofoam, but you could use square pieces and build tiers it is really up to you how you create your cake.

My green Styrofoam shed so I had to cover it with plastic wrap first before adding fruit or else you would not be able to eat that fruit.

Skewer Sticks if you are putting separate pieces together like I did.

How To Make Your DIY Edible Fruit Holiday Birthday Cake Arrangement:

Take your Styrofoam pieces and use your skewer sticks and poke them through each piece making them stable.

Add any plastic wrap you will need and then start using your tooth picks and adding fruit.

Tips and Tricks I learned:

  • It helps if you put the tooth pick on the Styrofoam first and then poke your fruit last so you do not ruin or smash your fruit pieces.
  • If using small pieces of fruit you can break your tooth picks in half to save on using so many.
  • Fruit that works well are melons, berries, I used kiwis and a star fruit because of the time of year, but you can do anything you want.
  • I used Nutella on some of the strawberries, but you could dip lots of your fruit in chocolates.
  • You could make a cake like this and then use a Scentsy Fun Fondue at your party to let people dip their own fruit.

It is simple, it is fun and it was a HUGE hit with my family.  My kids were in love with it and to be honest so was I.  It was so pretty I cannot believe I made it myself.  The next time you want a healthy cake remember it does not always have to include frosting and flour.

  1. I LOVE this idea! You made this cake look super super tasty! Thanks for the tutorial too. :) Happy birthday!

    • Thank you so much Darlene! It was really easy to do, did take me a couple of hours off and on to do it because of my three kiddos, but 90% was eaten by the end of my party. Great thing is you just pull off the extra fruit and put it in a bowl to snack on later.

      Happy Holidays,

      Amee
