Inspired-Housewife: The Best Bathroom Homemade Cleaner Scum Remover

With my family having been sick, my hubby on multiple business trips, and the three little ones under foot, the cleanliness of my house got away from me.  My bathrooms were in dire need of a good cleaning, and I repeatedly saw pins on Pinterest and crunchy friends talk about how to use Dawn blue dish soap and vinegar as cleaners.

I am shocked and excited at how well it works.  I did the same little happy dance I did when I discovered my concoction to get urine stains and smells out of our guest mattress.  It is super easy to mix, and the results are nothing short of amazing.

What you will need:

  • A heavy duty cleaning or gardening spray bottle
  • 1 Cup White Vinegar (Heated)
  • 1 Cup Dawn Blue Liquid Dish Soap

The Directions:

Take vinegar and heat for 60 seconds in your microwave until hot but not boiling.  Pour the hot vinegar into the spray bottle, and add the cup of blue Dawn dish soap.  Shake gently to ensure good mixing, and then spray liberally onto the surface to be cleaned.  When mixed, the two compounds create a strong smell, and so I had to turn on my fan to dissipate the smell.

My shower and tub in my master bathroom were VERY dirty.  I sprayed the mixture on half of my tub and let it sit for about thirty minutes.  I grabbed my sponge and turned on the water.  I did not have to scrub hard like I normally do with that much dirt and soap scum.  The soap scum and dirt washed away easily.  The photos tell the story, and as you can see the difference is unbelievable.  My tub surface on the left was so shiny and clean you could see the reflection of the light up above.  My shower was disgusting, and it too cleaned up nicely.

I will warn you do not use this mixture on porous surfaces.  One person on Pinterest commented on a pin that she ruined her black marble shower.  Make sure whatever surface, especially if it is expensive tile or stone, you test it in an inconspicuous area and check for undesired changes.  I also used this mixture to clean my sinks and nasty stains on my linoleum bathroom floor.

The great part about this is you can make a lot of cleaner cheaply, and it WORKS!  This is the best homemade scum remover I have ever tried.

XOXO,

Amee

  1. I can’t wait to try this…thanks so much for sharing at Mix it up Monday :)

  2. My tub is just covered with gross stains I can’t remove, so I will give this a try. Does it have to be Dawn, though? I have Ajax right now and I’ll try it with that. Thanks for sharing, I found you via I should be mopping’s hop today!

    • Hi Jessica,

From what I have read it has to be the Blue Dawn, but give what you have a try. Make sure you let it sit about a half hour as I did. Let me know if it works. Glad you found me! :) Amee

  5. I appreciate your recipes for the stain out and odor out. Just wondered if you had any tried and true recipes for something to take the cat urine out of carpet. We thought about the 1 for the mattress but are afraid it will discolor the carpet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Deb,
I have had people who used the mattress stain/odor on their gold carpet and it did not ruin it. The peroxide is really for fighting the stain so I guess you could try just the dawn, vinegar and maybe through in some club soda. I have heard club soda works on stains and if you can get the carpet up seal the peed areas with Kilz interior primer to seal the odor right out. I hate cats who pee they do not last long indoors in my house. Hope it works!
