Kid Friendly Valentine’s Day Ideas

When I was a child my parents found special ways to make me feel loved on Valentine’s Day, and they did not break the bank.  As a mother I want to continue this tradition and make Valentine’s Day special for my children too.  Here are some kid friendly Valentine’s Day ideas to make this year memorable and fun for your kiddo.

1. Valentine Pancakes:  Make your kids a special breakfast with heart pancakes.  All you need is a metal heart shaped cookie cutter and your child’s favorite fruit.  Spray the cookie cutter with non-stick spray, set on griddle, and pour in the batter.

2. Coupons:  Make coupons for daddy dates to the pet store, mommy time to get ice cream at their favorite restaurant, movie night and sleep over with mommy and daddy in the living room.

3. Picnic in the Park:  If you live in a warm climate pack a picnic lunch/dinner and take your kids to the park for a special treat.

4. Bath Time Fun:  Make colored ice cubes out of heart or regular ice cube trays using red or pink food coloring.  Then drop it in their bath to make it fun.

5. Blueberry Muffin Delight:  If you want a healthy snack for your kids, then make them blue berry muffins, but do it in a heart-shaped cupcake or muffin pan.

6. Coloring:  Free coloring pages are all over the Internet.  All you need to go is search for Valentine’s Day coloring pages and several sites will pop up.  Here is one I really like to use with my kids:  http://www.coloring.ws/valentines.htm

7. Stuffed Animals:  One of the gifts or special treats I love to give my kids each year is stuffed animals.  This year my son will receive a doggy with hearts all over it and my daughter a giraffe with heart spots instead of a regular giraffe print.  They are inexpensive and my kids love to sleep with their stuff pets.

8. Lacing Valentine’s Cards:  Get glue sticks, construction paper, a hole-punch, a shoe lace or yarn, scissors, and card stock.  Glue the construction and card stock paper together.  Then with a pencil, marker or crayon draw a big heart,.  Use your scissors to cut out the heart, and then make holes about an inch apart around the outside edge of the heart.  Use the shoe lace or yarn to lace through the heart.  This is a fun and easy craft great for fine motor skill improvements.

9. Books and Stickers:  There are lots of stickers that are Valentine’s Day themed, but kids love stickers anytime of the year.  Books are another big hit in my house, and I recently found a Curious George story, coloring, and sticker activity book all-in-one that I plan to give my kids to share with their stuffed animals.

10. Special Sandwiches:  Do your kids like sandwiches?  Again, use a metal heart shaped cookie cutter and cut slices of bread into the shape of hearts, and then add whatever sandwich filling you use, like peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese, or cream cheese.
