Today we took our kids on an adventure to the pet store so they could pick out some goldfish for their ten gallon fish tank they got for Christmas. The tank was set up for several days, and Tristan made sure to fully test the waters out. Who really needs fish when you have flashlights, PVC pipes, stickers, small plastic toys, and even lady bugs to toss in and watch? As you can imagine there has been a lot of “no touch” being said. We will see how long the goldfish actually survive. We caught Tristan drinking from a cupful of tank water this morning because he said he was thirsty. I told him, “Tristan, if you are thirsty I can get you a drink, but do not drink water from the tank, because there are bacteria.” He just smiled happily, and kept on drinking water from his pink cup.
The kids were so excited when Michael asked them which fish they wanted to take home. He tried to get them to pick out individual goldfish, but neither of them understood, so Michael ended up choosing four small goldfish himself. He also picked out a couple of plants, and of course, a pirate ship just for Tristan. I joked to Michael while still in the store that Tristan would probably kill the fish before we ever got them safely home, and wouldn’t you know it, as Tristan was climbing into his car seat he stepped right on the bag with the fish. Luckily, he did not kill them, and they did arrive home safely, but only time will tell their longevity if he keeps giving the fish flashlights, pipes and other toys with which to play.
Now, we are home, the goldfish are acclimated, and the kids are super-excited. I am sure this will be a good learning experience, but I told Michael not to tell Tristan where the fish go if they die, because likely he would fish out a goldfish, and have it meet the great porcelain god early just to watch it swirl down. I will keep you posted on our success or failure to keep the newest members of the family alive. Happy Fishing!
