I love the holidays. Anyone who knows me also knows I love this time of year. I was chomping at the bit to decorate in the middle of November, and in the end my house did turn out extremely cute. Yesterday, however, I was beyond ready to eliminate the holiday clutter and get my house back. After Christmas our tree looked like it had been through war. It was stripped half-naked thanks to my five-year-old who decorated the tree in his own way. Balls, puzzle pieces, food, Legos, wooden train tracks, juice cups, and you name it all took residence within the branches of our tree. I am not sure how many ornaments were casualties of this war, but more than twenty I know of were mangled beyond recognition or were left with the hanger strings ripped from their cores.
So, weary from the countless battles to save ornaments by moving them higher and higher onto the tree, I decided yesterday was the day it all had to go. I felt slightly sad because my son, who took so much delight in destroying all the ornaments he could reach, started to cry as the tree came down. The way he reacted you would have thought we were amputating his right leg after the war. I tried to show my sadness to console him. In reality I thought “Praise God! You can’t ruin anything else now!”
Perhaps I was more ready to get my house back in order due to my third child Ayla being born this month. I have less time to clean, no energy due to lack of sleep, and I would rather spend my time playing with my older children and holding my new baby. Whatever the reason I am super glad to see it all gone and stored away until next year, the next war. At least now I do not need to keep saying “No Touch!” seemingly hundreds of times a day. So to you, a very Happy Holiday Cleanup whenever you get around to it.
